(Because if it’s not raining… just wait five minutes.)

Here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, we love our trees, our coffee, our mountain views—and yes, even our rain. But as the winter clouds start rolling in, our homes need a little extra TLC to stay cozy, dry, and ready for the months ahead.

So grab your favorite mug of something warm, put on your "I’m ready for winter" hoodie, and let’s get your home prepped—PNW style!

1. Clean Your Gutters (aka: Leaf Soup Removal)

Nothing says “welcome to winter” like a waterfall pouring off your roof in all the wrong places.
Make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear of leaves, twigs, and that random tennis ball your dog swears he never lost. Clean gutters = happy siding and a foundation that stays nice and dry.

2. Check Your Roof… Preferably Without Reenacting an Action Movie

A quick roof inspection can save you from future leaks. Look for missing shingles, moss buildup, or anything that screams, “Fix me before it pours!”
And if climbing ladders isn’t your hobby? Call a professional. Your ankles will thank you.

3. Cozy Up Your Windows & Doors

A drafty window in winter is basically Mother Nature’s way of saying, “I hope you enjoy higher energy bills!”
Add weatherstripping, seal gaps, or treat yourself to some insulated curtains. Your heating bill—and your toes—will appreciate it.

4. Show Your Furnace Some Love

Before your furnace gets promoted to “24/7 MVP,” change the filter and test the system. A warm home is a happy home… and a home that won’t turn you into a human popsicle while you try to find a space heater in the garage.

5. Prepare for the PNW Power-Outage Olympics

Storms happen, and sometimes the power goes out. Create a simple emergency kit—flashlights, batteries, snacks, maybe even some board games if you’re feeling nostalgic.
Bonus tip: Candles are great… unless you forget where you put the lighter. Store them together. Trust us.

6. Trim Those Branches Before They Trim Your Roof

Tree branches get heavy with rain and wind. Give them a haircut before the winter storms give you an unwanted skylight.

7. Treat Your Home Like a Spa Guest: Moisture Control Edition

With all the rain, indoor humidity can creep up. Use exhaust fans, crack a window when showering (yes, even if it's cold!), or set out your trusty dehumidifier. Your walls and windows will thank you… and so will your houseplants.

8. Don’t Forget the Exterior Lights

Winter = darkness by 4:30 pm.
Replace bulbs around walkways, porches, and driveways to keep things safe—and to avoid tripping over that package you didn’t know arrived.

9. Show Your Deck and Patio Some Love

Cover outdoor furniture, sweep off debris, and maybe even give the grill a last hoorah before it goes into hibernation. Rain doesn’t need an excuse to ruin a good patio cushion.

10. Celebrate the Cozy Season

Once your home is winter-ready, reward yourself with a warm drink, a soft blanket, and pride in knowing your house is ready to take on whatever the Northwest skies throw at it. You've earned it.

(And if you're extra prepared, go ahead and brag a little on social media—we won’t judge!)

Winter in the PNW is part of what makes this area so magical. With just a little prep, your home will stay dry, warm, and ready for all the cozy days ahead.
